Patek Philippe Unveils Exclusive World Time Minute Repeaters for Milan 2026 Exhibition

Patek Philippe is set to dazzle enthusiasts at the Watch Art Grand Exhibition Milan 2026 with the introduction of two special iterations of its revered Ref. 5531 timepiece. This model, which debuted in 2017, seamlessly integrates two of the manufacture's signature complications: the World Time display, drawing from the legacy of Louis Cottier, and a minute repeater capable of chiming the local time for the city indicated at the 12 o'clock position. The harmonious blend of these functions first appeared in a limited release for the New York Art of Watches Grand Exhibition, later becoming a staple of the permanent collection in 2018.

For the Milan 2026 event, the brand is reintroducing this iconic design with two new versions crafted in white gold, designated as references 5531G-012 and 5531G-013. Each of these exclusive timepieces is limited to a mere five units. Their primary distinction lies in the intricate cloisonné enamel map adorning the dial's center, with one portraying Milan illuminated by day and the other capturing its enchanting nocturnal ambiance. The elegant 40.2mm Calatrava-style case retains its signature elements, including openworked, skeletonized lugs and a meticulously hand-guillochéd caseband featuring a hobnail (Clous de Paris) pattern that extends to the left-side slide piece. Despite accommodating a complex array of components, the case maintains a slender profile at just 11.49mm thick, with a lug-to-lug measurement of 47.35mm and a strap attachment width of 21mm. Each watch is accompanied by two interchangeable casebacks: one solid white gold and the other sapphire crystal, both engraved with the inscription “Patek Philippe Milan 2026”. While not water-resistant, the watch is designed to offer protection against humidity and dust.

The dial's artistic focal point is a Grand Feu cloisonné enamel masterpiece set on an 18K gold plate. This miniature representation of Milan, in map form, differentiates the two references: the 5531G-012 showcases sunlit streets, while the 5531G-013 captures the city's streets aglow with artificial light at night. Surrounding this central artwork is the World Time display, listing 24 city names in Italian, with Milan notably highlighted in red. A 24-hour ring provides a day/night indication for all 24 time zones. Time is precisely told by the distinctive 5531 hands, which include an openworked hour hand inspired by the Southern Cross constellation and a lozenge-shaped minutes hand, both fashioned from white gold. The 5531 is powered by the self-winding calibre R 27 HU, an in-house movement measuring 32mm in diameter and 8.5mm thick. Comprising 452 components, it masterfully combines the World Time mechanism with a minute repeater that utilizes two traditional gongs. A key innovation is the patented striking mechanism, which enables the repeater to chime the local time for the city selected at 12 o'clock. A pusher at 2 o'clock allows for one-hour increments in time zone adjustment, while the left slide activates the repeater. The movement features a 22K gold off-centre micro-rotor adorned with guilloché and operates at 21,600 vibrations per hour, offering a power reserve of 43 to 48 hours. Consistent with the original 5531, the repeater gongs are directly affixed to the caseband, optimizing sound transmission. The day variant (5531G-012) is paired with a hand-stitched light brown grained calfskin strap with cream stitching, while the night version (5531G-013) is fitted with a midnight-blue strap featuring red stitching. Both straps are secured by white-gold fold-over clasps. Each reference is limited to five pieces, with pricing to be announced.

The unveiling of these limited-edition timepieces demonstrates Patek Philippe's unwavering commitment to horological artistry and mechanical sophistication. These creations are not merely instruments for measuring time but are evocative narratives, capturing the essence of Milan through intricate enamel work while embodying the pinnacle of watchmaking excellence. They stand as a testament to the brand's heritage of innovation and its dedication to crafting extraordinary, highly sought-after collector's items.
