The executive board of Cinema United, representing the world's largest association of movie theater owners, unanimously decided to extend Michael O'Leary's term as CEO-president for an additional five years. This decision, made during a recent meeting in Los Angeles, underscores the organization's faith in his vision and strategic direction.
Cinema United, which advocates for the theatrical film experience, plays a pivotal role in the industry. Its extensive membership encompasses over 67,000 screens across the United States and internationally. Historically known as the National Association of Theatre Owners, the organization also collaborates with the MPA on the movie ratings system.
Michael O'Leary assumed his leadership role in 2023, succeeding long-serving head John Fithian. His selection was based on his broad expertise in government relations, lobbying, and the entertainment sector. Prior to joining Cinema United, he held senior positions at prominent organizations such as The Entertainment Software Association, 21st Century Fox, the Motion Picture Association, as well as roles on Capitol Hill and within the Department of Justice.
Mike Bowers, Cinema United's board chair and CEO of Harkins Theatres, lauded O'Leary as an ardent and dedicated champion for the exhibition industry. Bowers highlighted O'Leary's focus on unity, strategic planning, and continuous improvement, which has garnered the trust of members of all sizes and studio partners. He expressed optimism about the opportunities that lie ahead for the industry in the coming five years.
Despite the prevailing opportunities, the exhibition sector confronts significant challenges. Movie attendance has yet to fully recover to pre-pandemic levels, creating considerable pressure on cinema operators. Recent labor disputes further impacted the industry, leading to a sustained reduction in film releases. However, O'Leary is recognized for actively reshaping this narrative by promoting the substantial economic and cultural contributions of movie theaters worldwide. A recent report from Cinema United revealed that the domestic industry alone invested over $1.5 billion in theater renovations and upgrades during the past year.
The industry's dedication to ushering in the \"Next Great Era of Cinema\" will be prominently showcased at CinemaCon, its annual global convention scheduled for next spring. The central theme for this event will be \"Innovation and Experiences.\" Additionally, this year marked a significant branding shift, with O'Leary overseeing the organization's name change to Cinema United to avoid confusion with other entities.
In a statement, O'Leary expressed immense honor in representing the dedicated individuals who own and operate theaters globally, emphasizing his enthusiasm for future industry prospects. He extended gratitude to Chairman Mike Bowers, outgoing Chair Bob Bagby, and the entire Cinema United Executive Board for the opportunity. O'Leary also acknowledged the hard work and creativity of his colleagues at Cinema United, attributing the organization's success to their collective efforts and dedication to supporting the industry.
Established in 1948, the organization boasts a vast network, representing more than 33,000 movie screens across all 50 U.S. states and Canada, and an additional 30,000 screens in 81 other countries. Its membership is diverse, encompassing everything from major cinema circuits to independent single-screen theaters in various cities and towns around the globe.
