Rado Captain Cook High-Tech Ceramic Chronograph: A Tri-Tone Masterpiece

Jun 04, 2026, 8:30 AM

The latest iteration of the Rado Captain Cook High-Tech Ceramic Chronograph (ref. R32195202) showcases a distinctive tri-tone design that commands attention. Having observed the popularity of larger Captain Cook models at a recent tennis event, which Rado sponsors, the author was eager to experience this new blue and rose gold variant firsthand. This timepiece immediately distinguishes itself with its striking visual presence, a step up even from its predecessors reviewed last year. The harmonious blend of dark blue and gray ceramic, accented by elegant rose gold elements, creates a visually appealing and luxurious aesthetic.

This Rado Captain Cook High-Tech Ceramic Chronograph boasts impressive specifications. Encased in 43 × 49.8 × 16.2mm high-tech ceramic, it offers a robust 300m water resistance, making it a formidable diving chronograph. The dark gray ceramic case beautifully complements a rose-gold-PVD-treated bezel, which features a deep blue ceramic insert with a white diving scale. The right side of the case integrates a rose-gold-toned crown and pushers, enhancing the coherent design. The blue sunray dial, while subtly different in hue from the bezel, features a classic 3-6-9 sub-dial layout with an integrated date window at 6 o'clock. The running seconds are located at 3 o'clock, while the 12-hour and 30-minute chronograph counters reside at 6 and 9 o'clock, respectively. A notable detail is the white date disc with red numerals, an unexpected but ultimately cohesive choice, as the red is echoed in the tips of the chronograph hands. The luminous Captain Cook hour and minute hands are also finished in rose gold, matching the central chronograph hand with its red tip. A clever design element is the subtle integration of the 300m/1,000ft depth rating within the 6 o'clock sub-dial.

Turning the watch over reveals the Rado R801 automatic chronograph movement through the sapphire case back. This movement, derived from the ETA A31 with an added Dubois Dépraz chronograph module, operates at 28,800 vph, contains 37 jewels, and provides a 59-hour power reserve. It also incorporates an antimagnetic Nivachron hairspring. While the finishing is straightforward, details such as perlage on the bridges and a brushed, anchor-shaped rotor with vertical stripes add visual flair. The watch is completed with a ceramic three-row bracelet, featuring matte outer links and polished center links, secured by an asymmetrical titanium butterfly clasp. Although the clasp lacks a micro-adjustment system, the bracelet's overall comfort and the watch's balanced feel on the wrist are remarkable. Despite its 169-gram weight, the ceramic construction ensures it wears more comfortably than a comparable stainless steel model. The watch’s proportions are well-executed, making it surprisingly wearable on an 18.5cm wrist, though its 16.2mm thickness ensures a noticeable presence. The polished center links, while aesthetically pleasing, tend to attract fingerprints, requiring frequent cleaning.

Wearing this Rado Captain Cook High-Tech Ceramic Chronograph has been an enjoyable experience, offering a refreshing departure from conventional timepieces. Its quality construction, highlighted by smooth pusher action and defined clicks, instills confidence in its craftsmanship. Priced at €6,500 / US$6,250 / £5,500 / CHF 5,700, this model aligns with previous offerings and presents a compelling choice for enthusiasts seeking a distinctive, oversized watch with significant wrist presence. This timepiece beautifully merges robust functionality with sophisticated design, embodying both power and elegance.
