Experience the Rhythm of Time: Pequignet's Royale Paris Chronograph Marries Precision with Musical Passion
Pequignet's Legacy and Revival in French Watchmaking
Founded in 1973 in Morteau, a historical center for watchmaking in France's Jura region, Pequignet has established itself through a dedication to in-house manufacturing. The brand achieved a significant milestone in 2011 with the introduction of its proprietary Calibre Royal. Following a period of stabilization in 2021 under the ownership of Enowe Excellence, a family investment firm focused on rejuvenating French artisanal enterprises, Pequignet continues to innovate. The latest chronograph, while bearing the "Royale Paris" name, incorporates the brand's more slender automatic Calibre Initial, marking a celebration of French ingenuity and cultural influence.
The "French Touch" Inspiration and Revolutionary BPM Scale
The new chronograph draws its inspiration from the "French Touch" movement, a prominent style of electronic dance music that emerged from France in the 1990s, famously pioneered by acts such as Daft Punk. This watch uniquely integrates a BPM (beats-per-minute) scale, designed to track a diverse array of musical tempos. It functions akin to a medical pulsometer, but instead of monitoring heartbeats, it measures music beats. By activating the chronograph and counting 30 drum bass kicks, users can accurately determine a track's tempo. The dial's outer edge features a timer from 35 to 180 BPM, marked with striking turquoise details against a black background, and graphic sound bars visually resembling an audio equalizer.
Aesthetic Excellence: Dial and Design Elements
The watch's dial boasts a captivating horizontal gradient, transitioning from a lively electric blue in its upper half to a deep black below. Similar to its predecessors, a subtle circular channel separates the peripheral BPM scale from the dial's core, punctuated by meticulously faceted hour markers. The textured, snailed black sub-dials evoke the aesthetic of vinyl records, designating running seconds at the 3 o'clock position and a 30-minute chronograph totalizer at 9 o'clock. Luminous hour and minute hands, along with a domed, "glassbox" style sapphire crystal, ensure readability and protection.
Robust Construction and Ergonomic Case Design
Encased in 39.5mm of stainless steel with a thickness of 12.7mm, the watch is engineered to withstand depths of up to 50 meters. Its sporty character is accentuated by recessed case flanks and classic piston-style chronograph pushers. The case architecture is highlighted by satin-brushed surfaces meticulously contrasted with sharply defined polished bevels. An intricate detail of its construction is the individually produced and attached lugs, showcasing the brand's dedication to quality.
Precision Engineering: The Calibre Initial Movement
Despite its association with the Royale collection, this timepiece is powered by Pequignet's fifth in-house movement, the Calibre Initial. This automatic caliber is notably slender, measuring just 4.2mm, and features a cam-actuated chronograph module developed in collaboration with Dubois-Depraz. Operating at 28,800 vibrations per hour, it offers a substantial power reserve of 65 hours, ensuring reliable performance and precision.
