Patek Philippe Unveils New Instantaneous Perpetual Calendar Chronograph 5978P-010

Oct 01, 2026, 12:03 PM

Patek Philippe's Watch Art Grand Exhibitions are pivotal events for the brand, serving as unique platforms to display its exquisite craftsmanship, rich history, and exceptional artistic skills to both watch connoisseurs and the general public. For these exhibitions, Patek Philippe consistently unveils special and limited editions, sometimes even introducing novel references, movements, or technical innovations that may eventually join its permanent collection. Following six limited editions in Tokyo (2023), six in Singapore (2019), and nine in New York (2017), the Watch Art Grand Exhibition Milan 2026 continues this tradition with seven limited editions specifically for the Italian market. Among the new introductions, the 5978P is poised to generate significant discussion, marking a new pinnacle in Patek Philippe's distinguished lineage of combining the chronograph and perpetual calendar complications, an area where the brand holds unparalleled expertise.

The new Patek Philippe 5978P-010 features the innovative hand-wound calibre CH 29-535 PS QI, an instantaneous perpetual calendar chronograph. This sophisticated mechanism merges two of the brand's renowned inventions: the CH 29-535 PS chronograph (patented in 2009) and the instantaneous perpetual calendar module found in the R CHR 27 PS QI calibre. The 5978P-010's design and functionality are so intrinsically Patek Philippe that it feels like a natural evolution within their collection. Far from diminishing its importance, this seamless integration only enhances the model's allure and significance.

A Legacy of Innovation in Complications

Patek Philippe has long held an esteemed position in the realm of perpetual calendar chronographs, a legacy that began in 1941 with the reference 1518. This groundbreaking timepiece was the first to integrate these two complex functions into a wristwatch, establishing a visual standard for intricate wristwatches and initiating a distinguished line of 'high complications'. Subsequent models, such as the iconic ref. 2499, the perfectly balanced 3970, the distinctive TV-shaped 5020, the remarkable 5970, and the contemporary 5270 (which introduced a movement based on the brand’s CH 29-535 chronograph), have continued to build upon this rich history, each contributing to Patek Philippe's reputation for horological mastery.

The calibre CH 29-535 PS QI, comprising no less than 500 components and 33 jewels, is a testament to Patek Philippe's engineering prowess. Its Gyromax balance, featuring a Breguet overcoil hairspring, operates at a frequency of 4 Hz, ensuring precision. With a power reserve ranging from 55 to 65 hours, this movement is designed for sustained performance. True to the tradition of high-end manual-wind chronographs, it incorporates a horizontal clutch and a column wheel, adorned with a polished cap in Patek's signature style. The standout feature is its instantaneous perpetual calendar, where all four calendar indications transition simultaneously within a mere 30 milliseconds. Unlike conventional progressive calendar mechanisms, this instantaneous jump necessitates the accumulation of energy over several hours, which is then released in a fraction of a second to drive the calendar discs swiftly and accurately.

Exquisite Design and Unparalleled Legibility

The 5978P-010 is encased in a classic and elegant 42mm platinum round case, with a thickness of 14.2mm. Its fully polished surface, concave bezel, scalloped lugs, and rectangular pushers exude sophistication. As is customary for Patek Philippe's platinum watches, a subtle diamond is set between the lugs at 6 o'clock, a discreet mark of its luxurious material. The navy-blue dial, with its textured center and black-gradient rim, presents a visually stunning aesthetic. The design achieves a perfect balance and elegance, integrating the chronograph and perpetual calendar indications with remarkable clarity, almost disguising the underlying mechanical complexity.

The dial's layout prioritizes legibility, with the day, date, and month indications thoughtfully positioned around the upper section. The day of the week is located between 10 and 11 o'clock, the date at 12 o'clock, and the month between 1 and 2 o'clock. The leap year indicator is at 4 o'clock, and the day/night indication is gracefully integrated into the running seconds sub-dial at 8 o'clock. The moon phase display is at 6 o'clock. Notably, the day and month are presented in Italian, a fitting tribute to the Milano exhibition. The 30-minute chronograph counter is situated at 3 o'clock. The interplay of different textures, levels, and finishes on the dial adds a delightful sense of depth and refinement. The Patek Philippe 5978P-010 is presented on a navy-blue composite strap with red stitching, secured by a patented platinum triple-blade fold-over clasp. This limited edition comprises only 120 pieces, with the price to be confirmed.
