Maison Alcée & MB&F Unveil the Nostromo Clock Kit

Maison Alcée, renowned for its innovative self-assembly clock kits, has once again pushed the boundaries of horological engagement through a new collaboration with MB&F. This partnership introduces the Nostromo, an extraterrestrial-inspired clock designed by Maximilian Maertens, offering enthusiasts a unique opportunity to construct a high-horology timepiece themselves. This initiative builds upon Maison Alcée's previous success, including an award-winning kit and a popular limited edition.

The Nostromo clock kit represents a significant evolution from Maison Alcée's original designs. Maximilian Maertens, a key creative force at MB&F, drew inspiration from H.R. Giger's iconic work on the film 'Alien,' specifically the spaceship Nostromo. This influence is evident in the clock's distinctive arched base and overall aesthetic, which clearly align with MB&F's signature design language. The collaboration marks a strategic step for MB&F as Max Büsser gradually empowers younger talents like Maertens with greater creative autonomy.

While retaining the core concept of Maison Alcée's Persée kit, which scales up a wristwatch movement for a larger, self-assembled clock, the Nostromo incorporates several notable enhancements. The clock's movement is now positioned horizontally, allowing it to rotate on its feet for an interactive element. The time display is ingeniously angled upwards, improving visibility, and a selectable hour chime function has been integrated. The kit also includes specialized watchmaking tools, some made from beryllium copper to prevent scratches, along with a comprehensive 250-page illustrated instruction manual that features QR codes for video tutorials and access to a dedicated online support community. The entire assembly process is designed to be completed in approximately 10 hours, culminating in a functional high-horology piece with a fourteen-day power reserve.

The finished Nostromo clock, weighing 760 grams and measuring 160mm in length, 135mm in width, and 123mm in height, is crafted from a combination of stainless steel, brass, and German silver. The dial, rendered in MB&F's characteristic 'peacock blue,' is segmented into individual components, and the clock's black hands have been redesigned to enhance contrast. This limited edition of 50 kits is available for CHF 12,000, inviting individuals to contribute their time and skill to creating a truly unique horological artifact.

This collaboration between Maison Alcée and MB&F not only delivers an exceptional product but also fosters a deeper appreciation for the intricate craft of horology. It allows participants to actively engage in the creation of a sophisticated timepiece, aligning with both brands' commitment to innovation and artistic expression. The Nostromo stands as a testament to the enduring appeal of hands-on craftsmanship within the world of high-end clockmaking, reinforcing the shared vision of both companies.
