Exceptional Rolex Chronographs Featured in Phillips Geneva Auction

Sep 30, 2026, 6:07 PM

A distinguished assortment of 16 Rolex chronographs from the renowned collection of Pucci Papaleo is set to be a highlight at Phillips’ Geneva Watch Auction: XXIV this November. Papaleo, who has dedicated over three decades to the scholarly study, acquisition, and documentation of these timepieces, has significantly influenced the current market's understanding of Rolex chronographs. The curated selection, part of his impressive 70-piece collection, spans from the initial Oyster-cased chronographs introduced in 1939 to the manual-winding Daytona models. Each watch is notable for its exceptional state of preservation, characterized by distinct case edges, clear hallmarks, untouched surfaces, and authentic aged dials, making them highly desirable for collectors.

Among the featured timepieces, two particular models are anticipated to fetch over CHF 1,000,000 (approximately $1.2 million). One is a circa 1941 18k yellow gold Ref. 3830, which stands out with its unconventional 30 mm square, stepped case—a striking departure from Rolex's typical circular designs. This piece is considered singular, with no other Ref. 3830 known to have appeared at auction, and was last publicly seen in 2004, featuring a dial signed by the Milanese retailer Verga. The other is a circa 1970 Ref. 6264 “Paul Newman Lemon,” believed to be the only 14k yellow gold variant within its serial range, and possibly the earliest such configuration to be offered on the market. Its distinctive creamy yellow dial and case combination is, according to Papaleo's extensive research, unparalleled among known Paul Newman Daytonas. Additionally, a Rolex “Stelline” Ref. 6062 in 18k yellow gold is projected to sell for between CHF 600,000 and 1,200,000, while other significant lots include a rare Ref. 3525 “Bariletto,” an 18k pink gold Ref. 3335, and a stainless steel Ref. 6239 with a “Paul Newman Musketeer” dial, each with estimates ranging from CHF 250,000 to 500,000.

Phillips senior consultants Aurel Bacs and Livia Russo commended Papaleo's unwavering pursuit of knowledge and perfection, acknowledging his invaluable contribution in equipping collectors with a profound understanding of these historical horological treasures. Before the auction takes place on November 7–8 at Geneva’s Hotel President, selected highlights from the collection will embark on a global tour, visiting major cities such as Dubai, New York, Singapore, Hong Kong, Riyadh, and London, offering enthusiasts worldwide a preview of these extraordinary watches.

This auction not only showcases a remarkable collection of vintage timepieces but also underscores the enduring passion and meticulous scholarship that drive the world of watch collecting. It celebrates the legacy of innovation and craftsmanship that Rolex represents, inspiring a deeper appreciation for the artistry and history embedded in each watch. Such events reinforce the idea that true value lies not just in monetary worth, but in the stories, dedication, and historical significance that these objects embody, encouraging a continued reverence for heritage and excellence.
