Arnold & Son, a brand rooted in the legacy of 18th-century English chronometer pioneer John Arnold, has introduced two captivating new limited-edition timepieces. These models belong to the chronometry collection, a tribute to John Arnold's commitment to precision. The distinctive feature of these watches is the prominently displayed true seconds mechanism, also known as a deadbeat seconds. The latest iterations of the DSTB (Dial Side True Beat) incorporate an innovative stop-seconds function, presented in refined precious metal cases with exquisitely detailed grained dials.
Drawing inspiration from John Arnold's historical marine chronometers, which were crucial for naval navigation due to their precise second readings, the new DSTB Stop-Seconds models revive this legacy of exact synchronization. These timepieces, now in a more wearable 42mm size, feature a crown-activated stop-seconds function, allowing for impeccable time setting. The visually striking deadbeat seconds mechanism, first introduced in 2014, remains a central design element, enhanced by symbolic dial colors like Cliff Grey and Kingsand, which nod to Arnold's Cornish origins and the brass components of his original movements.
The intricate deadbeat mechanism dominates a significant portion of the dial, showcased beneath three artfully skeletonized bridges. A slender, blued seconds hand advances with a precise single-second jump, marking time on a blue printed track. The three-dimensional gold bridges, sculpted like wishbones, are meticulously mirror-polished and open-worked, revealing the underlying gears and a blued anchor-shaped lever – a further allusion to John Arnold's maritime heritage. The watch is safeguarded by a domed sapphire crystal, while a flat crystal on the caseback offers a clear view of the movement. Powering these exquisite creations is the in-house A&S6303 automatic caliber, boasting a 55-hour power reserve and a 4Hz frequency, along with the crucial stop-seconds capability. The movement itself is a work of art, adorned with Côtes de Genève on the bridges, circular graining on the mainplate, blued screws, and hand-chamfered edges. The open-worked 22k gold rotor is intricately engraved with guilloché patterns and Arnold & Son's signature anchor emblem. Each of the red gold and platinum versions is limited to 18 pieces, with pricing set at CHF 46,000 for the red gold model with a grey alligator strap and CHF 56,800 for the platinum edition, which comes with an ink blue alligator strap.
These new timepieces are more than just instruments for telling time; they are a celebration of horological artistry and historical precision. They embody a spirit of innovation combined with deep respect for tradition, reminding us that true craftsmanship can seamlessly bridge the past and the present, delivering both exceptional functionality and profound beauty.
